Listening to the community is at the heart of The Beacon. Through our community work, we’re able to answer pressing questions and shed light on issues with real impacts for our neighbors.
Since our launch we’ve been listening to the community and used that information to help guide our reporting. In an effort to be more accountable and transparent about what stories come from our readers and tips, we’ve added this feature highlighting our community sourced stories. We began tagging stories community sourced in 2024 after launching our new website.
Here you’ll find all of our reporting tagged as “Community Sourced.” What does that mean? These are stories that have come from direct community engagement efforts by our team as well as when readers like you share story ideas with our team. Here’s how we define reporting that is “Community Sourced.”
- Tipline submissions that become stories
- Stories ideas that come through our virtual and in-person listening sessions
- When a community member emails a reporter directly with a story idea or tip
- Anything that comes to our physical mailing address
- Story ideas that come from social media like Instagram, Facebook and Reddit
- Anything from our Documenters program
