The Beacon has received nine awards from the Missouri Press Association, recognizing the work of our dedicated journalists.
Our nine awards — including two first-place honors, four second-place honors and three third-place honors — were earned by four of The Beacon’s reporters. Here are those award-winning stories:
- Josh Merchant won a first-place award for Best News or Feature Series for “Half of KC’s traffic deaths in the last two years happened on these 10 streets.”
- Suzanne King won a first-place award for Best Health Story for “Plasma you sell in east Kansas City could end up in medicine an ocean away.”
- Maria Benevento won a second-place award for Best Story About Education for “Year-round school is out at three KC-area schools, but another says it’s boosting test scores.”
- Meg Cunningham and Josh Merchant won a second-place award for Best Story About Government for “The Missouri legislature is cutting local governments’ power to pass their own laws.”
- Meg Cunningham won a second-place award for Best News Story for “Why rural Missouri schools and hospitals might become homebuyers.”
- Suzanne King won a second-place award for Best Health Story for “Weathered COVID before? Scientists say every new infection puts you at greater risk of getting long COVID.”
- Maria Benevento won a third-place award for Best Story About Education for “Independence’s four-day school week draws Missouri auditor probe.”
- Meg Cunningham won a third-place award for Best Story About Marginalized or Underrepresented Communities for “National conservative groups are working to limit transgender rights. They’re finding success in Missouri.”
- And Josh Merchant won a third-place award for Best Information Graphic for “Half of KC’s traffic deaths in the last two years happened on these 10 streets.”
