At The Beacon we want our stories shared widely for free by other news organizations. This means we welcome and encourage you to republish our reporting. We pursue journalism in the public interest, so we want to reach as many people as possible. Please follow these rules.

Are you an editor or publisher in a newsroom looking for free, trustworthy reporting to help fill gaps in your newsroom? Sign up for our republishing email to get updates from our Editor-in-Chief about the latest stories available for newsrooms like you to republish, for free. How can I republish The Beacon’s stories?

  • Give us credit, ideally in this format: “By Jane Reporter, The Beacon.”
  • Include the following at the top of the story: This story was originally published by The Beacon, an online news outlet focused on local, in-depth journalism in the public interest. Link “The Beacon” to the original version of the story.
  • For your convenience, at the bottom of each story we have a “Republish this story” button. Click that and all the code needed for the story will pop up for you to copy and paste.
  • If you republish The Beacon online, include the hyperlinks in the story.
  • It’s fine to change the story to suit your in-house style (for example, using “Lawrence, Kan.” instead of “Lawrence.”)
  • If you make changes that are more significant than style tweaks — such as adding a comment from a local official — you need to include a note like this: “Additional reporting by Joe Reporter.”
  • You can republish photos and graphics from The Beacon only with the stories with which they originally appeared. For any other uses, just ask us first.
  • If you share the story on social media, please mention @thebeaconkc (Twitter), @thebeaconkc (Facebook) and @theeaconkc (Instagram).
  • Don’t sell the story.
  • Don’t place the story behind a paywall. Feel free, however, to republish The Beacon on a page surrounded by ads you’ve already sold.
