This is one tough week.

Kansas City crowded together in celebration of a game, and walked away wounded.

A mother dead. Children shot. A city’s sense of safety dissolved in a few seconds of gunfire.

We’ll publish stories in the coming days and weeks that dig into a range of issues that came into focus when someone pulled a gun in a crowd. That will include things like the ongoing gun violence that destroys too many lives in our community on an all-too-steady basis. Or the trauma that stays with the victims of violence for a lifetime. And in response to the questions that you want answered.

The Beacon strives for context and depth. As a public service newsroom, our commitment goes beyond covering news as it happens.

We want to give you insights and context so Kansas City can understand what led to this violence and what might prevent a repeat.

Kansas City still has solid journalists who work hard to document truly awful developments like this. Our Kansas City Media Collective partners KCUR have coverage, and our colleagues at The Kansas City Star do, too

We hope you’ll turn to The Beacon for perspective on the story and its ramifications. And let us know if you have questions our reporters might be able to answer by digging deeper.
